How is your jewelry made?
I make each item personally from the highest quality raw materials like sterling silver sheet, wire, natural and lab grown gemstones, and chain. I use traditional metalsmithing techniques like sawing, forging, and soldering with my jewelers' torch. I take pride in each and every step of the process and make my jewelry to last, with the hope that you will treasure it for many years to come.
Where do recycled precious metals come from?
Recycled, non-mined sources of precious metals include reclaimed broken or unwanted jewelry, silverware, coins, dental scrap, and scrap material leftover from jewelry making. My primary metal supplier, Harmony Metals from Hoover & Strong, sources 100% of its precious metals from recycled sources and does not buy metals from mining companies.
What are Lab Created gemstones?
Lab created gemstones are cultured from natural components in a specialized laboratory environment created to duplicate nature's. Using the combination of chemical and environmental elements in which these gems would form naturally, the crystals grow over the course of a year, with the length of time depending on the complexity of the natural mineral.
As a result, lab created gems have the identical physical, chemical and optical properties as those found in nature. The benefit is that no mining is involved, preventing the environmental destruction and waste associated with mining, and assuring that your beautiful gemstone isn't hiding a dirty secret. As an added bonus, lab created gems are higher quality for less money, being nearly indistinguishable from natural stones.
Notable examples of lab created gems are Chatham Created Gemstones and Charles and Colvard Created Moissanite.
In what other ways is Ashley Adler Studio a "green" business?
Environmental impact is a primary concern in every business decision. Whenever possible, I reuse shipping boxes and other packing material, so your package may contain reused bubble wrap, paper, or packing peanuts. Every effort is made to reduce the use of plastic and when available, I use biodegradable plastic.
I am always looking for more eco-friendly ways to do things, such as using electrolytic etching instead of traditional acid-based processes to make my etched items. Electrolytic etching solution can be reused almost indefinitely, while acid becomes saturated with the etched metal and must be disposed of as hazardous waste.
